EDINBURGH CAPITALS 5 BELFAST GIANTS 6 – CHALLENGE CUP GROUP A
An end to end physical battle at Murrayfield Ice Rink tonight ended in a win for the Belfast Giants, but they had to work for it.
In a game that marked Glagow born Colin Shields’ 600th career game in Elite League competition it proved to be memorable as he helped his Belfast Giants team edge an 11-goal thriller.
The first period ended with the Edinburgh Capitals leading 1-0 through a shorthanded goal from Alexander Islamov who was set up by Upitis on a two on one break.
In the second period the game opened up and Belfast scored just 58 seconds in to the period through their Man of the Match, Sebastien Sylvestre (3 points on the night). However the Capitals were quickly back in the lead again through Dylan Anderson on 26 minutes when he was set up by Mike Cazzola on a fast break.
The period however belonged to the Giants who scored 4 goals through Spiro Goulakos, Cole Jarrett and one each from Shields and Darcy Murphy to lead 5-2 after two periods and look like they had the game wrapped up.
In the third period Taylor Stefishen and then Mike Cazzola (3 points on the night) brought Dmitiri Khristich’s men to within one, but Sylvestre’s second goal of the night on 47.44 nudged Belfast ahead by two again.
It wasn't over yet as Captain of the Edinburgh Capitals Mike D’Orazio netted on the powerplay at 54.54 to bring the score to 5-6. However a late penalty with under 2 minutes left on Banashkov was the final nail in the Caps coffin as the Giants held on for the points.
MOM for the Capitals was Mike D'Orazio, with the Giants MOM named Sebastien Sylvestre.
Thank you for your support tonight Edinburgh Capitals fans - next weekend we play Dundee Stars (Away) on Saturday, and Braehead Clan in the LEAGUE on Sunday in our first EIHL league fixture of 2017/18.
