Capitals bolster defence - Nyqvist signs up

Edinburgh Capitals have signed 24 year old Finnish defenceman Julius Nyqvist for the 2017/18 season.

Nyqvist joins the Capitals straight from the highly rated Liiga in Finland, the top tier in the country.

Born in Vantaa, the 5ft 11" and 194lb defenceman had a very impressive junior career working through the junior system at HIFK (Helsinki) from 2007-2012. During that time he represented Finland from U-16 level through to U-20. In 2009-2010 he represented Finland in the World Junior Championships and was part of a squad that took home Bronze medals.

Nyqvist is a defenceman who will bring an intelligent controlled game to the Capitals blue line and the club are extremely happy to have been able to entice him to the club.

The defencemen will be available to ice this weekend in the Capitals fixtures in Belfast on Saturday and then will make his home debut against Fife Flyers at Murrayfield this Sunday.

On signing Nyqvist said "I am looking forward to playing inEdinburgh. I have heard good things about the team and organisaion and at this point it feels like the best chance for me to go forwarrd in my career. Iwill brind a solid defensive game and like to play an easy first pass out the defensive zone and then join the rush. I will bring firepower to the blue line, both at even strength and on the powerplay"
