Czech mate for Karel Hromas

02 June 2016

Czech forward Karel Hromas joins ex-team mate Michal Dobron.

30 year old Hromas is a powerfully built Left Wing who brings a wealth of experience to the Capitals. The 6’ 1” and 220lb forward has played an impressive 323 Czech Extraliga (top tier) games and a further 73 games in the Czech second tier through his career to date. Hromas was a Chicago Blackhawk NHL draft pick in 2004 (Round 4 - #123 overall).

He joins the Capitals from HC Morzine in France where he has spent the past two seasons. In 2014/15 he played on the same roster as Michal Dobron and our coach has seen what Hromas will bring the Capitals first hand.

Dobron commented, “For me as a coach I can see Karel Hromas being a very important player for the Capitals. He is a strong physical forward who is excellent on both the power play and penalty kill. In Morzine I saw a player who is fast and has a hard shot. He’s a good skater and will give everything for the team every time he plays. He’s also a great character to have in the dressing room, he lifts a team with his sense of humour. I’m very pleased Karel will be joining me in Edinburgh next season”.

Karel Hromas said, “I left the Czech Republic two seasons ago as I needed a change. I loved my 2 years in France in the France Magnus league. It was great to experience a different country and a different style of hockey. When I got the chance to experience another European league by coming to Edinburgh I didn’t hesitate a minute. I think Edinburgh looks fantastic and all the guys I know who have played there have said it will be a great experience. Hockey in the UK is a good level and getting better every year, so it will also be a new challenge for me. What I really want is to help the team make the play offs and help the Capitals play hockey the fans like. Michal Dobron knows me, he knows what to expect from me, that played a big part also in me saying yes to this opportunity.”

In terms of what Capitals fans can expect from Hromas he said “My game is built around being a powerful winger. I play simple hockey, I never give up on a puck. I like to put pucks on net and play a physical game. On special teams I’m a good penalty killer and on the power play I like to put myself in front of the net or at even strength screen the goalie. I don’t mind putting myself in front of the net in the dirty areas and putting in those rebounds.

“I cannot wait to join this team. I’m really looking forward to coming over and seeing the city and meeting the fans. Right now I will concentrate on summer training and being in the best shape possible come September”.

Karel Hromas is a player who will add a strong physical presence to the Edinburgh Capitals. He will have a huge impact on the special teams next season, an area that can be vital in turning games around. The Capitals are determined to make their presence on the ice felt this upcoming season and Hromas will be an important part of that plan.
