Edinburgh Capitals sign NHL first round draft pick Pavel Vorobyov

10 June 2016

Ex-Chicago Blackhawk centre Pavel Vorobyov has agreed to join the Edinburgh Capitals for the forthcoming season.

34 year old Russian forward Vorobyov will become one of the most experienced forwards to play not only for the Edinburgh Capitals, but in the UK to date.

The 6ft and 194lb forward was picked by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the 2000 NHL draft, 11th overall. Highly regarded by NHL scouts, he was picked ahead of NHL superstars such as Brooks Orpik, Marcel Hossa and Niklas Kronwall by the Blackhawks that year.

Before joining the Blackhawks Vorobyov had an impressive junior career. As a teenager based in Yaroslavl in Russia he played for the U-18 Russia team who won Silver at the 1999-2000 World Championships. He then graduated first to the U-20 Russian side (7 games) and finally achieved the honour of dressing 4 times for the senior Russian team.

In 2003 the Chicago Blackhawks called up 21 year old Vorobyov to their NHL squad. Between 2003-2006 he played a hugely impressive 57 NHL games for the Blackhawks scoring 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) for the club. He also had a similarly impressive 98 points from just 168 games for the Blackhawks affiliate in the AHL, the Norfolk Admirals during that period.

Having chosen to move back to Russia in 2006 Vorobyov built on his experience in the US and has played in 206 KHL (top tier in Russia) games scoring 68 points, a significant total at that level. He also has experience in the second tier of Russia (the VHL) and has scored 62 points in just 94 games. His points to games ratio at every club he has played for is notably impressive and clearly the Russian international is hugely talented. He will bring a significant amount of offensive talent to the Edinburgh Capitals line up next season and coach Michal Dobron was clearly pleased with the transfer coup. “It is great to have Pavel as part of my team. He has experience playing in the NHL where he did well with Chicago. He has also played in other major leagues like the AHL and KHL, so he has the talent to play at any level. His point totals are great at every club he has been at and he also has International experience for Russia. He is a very talented player and is going to be hugely important in my line up. He speaks fluent English and I think he could do very well in our league next season.”

On joining the Capitals Pavel said “I wanted to experience life in Western Europe and heard great things about Scotland and Edinburgh in particular. I spent time in the United States earlier in my career where I learned to speak English fluently, so I know I will enjoy life in Scotland as communication will not be an issue. I’ve heard the hockey is a good standard in the UK, so I know it will be a great challenge. I’m really looking forward to meeting the Capitals fans and my team mates. I’m looking forward to moving over from my home in Moscow to my new city, Edinburgh.”

We see the signing of Pavel Vorobyov as a major statement of intent. We are building a hugely talented squad this summer and Vorobyov is undoubtedly going to play a key role for the club this season.
