Michael Ireland returns to the SNL Capitals

Promising right wing playmaker Michael Ireland has re-signed for the Edinburgh Capitals SNL side for season 2016/17.

The 19 year old has signed up looking to build on a promising 2015-16 season. Last year the 5ft 10”and 165b forward scored 10 points in 16 games for the SNL side and trained with and dressed in 6 games for the top tier Elite League squad. He also scored 37 points in 12 games at U-20 level which was the fifth highest in the league.

In terms of his development as a player to date Ireland said “I started playing hockey aged 8 for the Murrayfield junior ice hockey club and I worked my way up through the age group. I’ve just played my last season at under 20s.My highlights have included playing for Scotland on numerous occasions and I played in a Scotland team that beat the English for the first time in 20 years. I got the opportunity to train with the Elite League Capitals last season and also played a few games. It was a great experience and I feel vastly improved my game confidence on the ice.”

On signing on for next season he said “As soon as I heard that Martin Cingel was coaching I couldn't wait for the season to start.  I grew up watching him and he is highly respected at Murrayfield. I want to help get the team back on track and back to winning ways. We have got a great bunch of guys in the Caps SNL squad, with a lot of highly talented players.  The past two seasons we have narrowly missed out on winning the league. This year I want the Caps to be the dominant force in the league.”

Martin Cingel said of the signing “Michael is a hard working forward with a great attitude. He had experience with the Elite League squad last season which will have benefitted him greatly in terms of development. He has a chance to play SNL this season but also look to impress Elite League coach Michal Dobron. He’ll be a real asset for the club as a whole and is a great character in the dressing room. At the moment I am glad to have him a part of the SNL team, we will see what the season brings for Michael.”

Michael Ireland is another highly promising young player who has a great deal of potential. Add his name to your “ones to watch” for the season ahead…
