25 year old Canadian Matt Tipoff has agreed to link up with fellow St Mary’s University (SMU) graduate Michael D’Orazio at the Edinburgh Capitals.
The Right Wing has signed a one year contract with the club and will move to the capital in August after completing his MBA at SMU.
The 5ft 9” and 179lb forward was born in Toronto, Ontario. Tipoff has experienced playing alongside some of the biggest names in the sport as he has developed as a player. At the age of 15 Tipoff played minor hockey for Markham Waxers where he centred a line that included current Tampa Bay Lightning NHL star Steve Stamkos on his wing.
Tipoff is highly regarded for his passing ability and said in an interview in 2015 “Growing up playing on a line with Stamkos I was usually feeding him so it kind of stemmed from that, that’s probably where I learned how to pass the puck.”
Tipoff played Junior hockey for the Belleville Bulls between 2006-2010. During that time he was captained by one of the top defencemen in the world currently, P.K.Subban of the Montreal Canadiens. The player then completed his Junior career at the Kitchener Rangers where in 2010-11 he scored 60 points in just 66 games.
For the past 5 years Tipoff attended Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada. Recent Capitals recruit, defenceman Michael D’Ozario, attended over the same period. He has clearly been influential in the signing as the Capitals seek to build a unit of players who will bond on and off the ice quickly.
Tipoff scored an impressive 116 points in 123 games for the University over his 5 seasons scoring 33 goals and adding 83 assists. He was part of a highly successful programme at SMU as the University came close to winning the University Cup last season, losing in the semi-finals (to Taylor MacDougall’s University of New Brunswick).
Looking forward to the season ahead, when asked what he will bring to the Capitals line up he said “I consider myself a versatile forward who can play in all situations and be counted on to consistently create scoring chances. I’ve always prided myself on playing the game the right way. A combination of grit and skill have allowed me to be successful throughout junior and the CIS. I’m very excited for the opportunity to show the Caps fans what I can do next season.”
On agreeing to sign for the club he said “I’m extremely excited and proud to continue my career with the Edinburgh Capitals. I’ve heard only great things about the city and passionate fan base, and am very much looking forward to becoming a part of the Edinburgh community. “
He then added “After speaking with management and prior signings, it was clear to me that the organization is poised for a turnaround season. I jumped on the opportunity to join a great group of guys and am committed to doing anything I can to help the team succeed this year.”
On adding another talented forward to his roster coach Michal Dobron said “Matt will be a player who I know will play an important role for us this season. He will bring great passing ability, but also knows how to score goals. He will help our special plays too, he’ll be very important on the power play and penalty kill. He knows some of the players on my team already and I know they all think highly of him. I think we are building a really strong core to the team with a good mix of talent and experience. I’m looking forward to meeting Matt in person and having him as part of my team”
Edinburgh Capitals would like to welcome Matt Tipoff to their 2016/17 roster.
