Russian centre Yevgeni Fyodorov joins the Edinburgh Capitals

22 July 2016

Edinburgh Capitals have added talented 35 year old Russian centre, Yevgeni Fyodorov, to their 2016/17 roster.

The Capitals have captured the signing of Fyodorov for the 2016/17 campaign, and in doing so have lured a player with over 700 games playing at the top level of Russian ice hockey to the UK.

35 year old Fyodorov (a.k.a Evgeni Fedorov) is from Nizhny Tagil in Russia and is a 5ft 10” (196lbs) centre. He can however play across the forward line and is a versatile forward. As a Junior he played for SpartakovetsYekaernburg before making his professional debut as a 17 year old in the top tier of Russian hockey for KryliaSovetov Moskva.

Fyodorov played for a number of clubs at the top level of Russian hockey between 1997-2014, including AK Bars Kazan and Dynamo Moscow. In total the skilled centre has played a hugely impressive 742 professional games in the top tier of Russian ice hockey, making him one of most experienced players to play for the Edinburgh Capitals to date.

Notably Fyodorov was a 7th round draft pick by the LA Kings in 2000, and he also boasts a Silver medal at the 1999-2000 U-20 World Championships (Russia narrowly lost out to the Czech Republic in the final on a shootout). He also has experience playing at the top level of European ice hockey having competed in the Champions Hockey League and previously the European Champions Cup for another of his previous clubs, Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

For the past two seasons he has been icing for Sputnik Nizhny Tagil in the VHL (2nd tier of Russian hockey) where he averaged a respectable 0.5 points per game for the club.

However the lure of the Capital has meant that he will line up next season alongside fellow Russian Pavel Vorobyov in the Capitals squad. This is a hugely exciting partnership as Capital’s fans witness the first Russian players to represent the club since its formation.

Of the signing coach Michal Dobron said “We were offered Fyodorov and took time to research him as a player and individual. Scott and I agreed he sounded a great addition. His experience in one of the top leagues in the world mean he is another player who has the ability to make a big impact at the Capitals. He will fit in well with what we are building at the club, and having Vorobyov already can only help. He’s a dogged determined playerwho will play hard and who can play in any position on my front line. The Capitals are attracting players of a high calibre to the club this summer, this is another hugely important signing for our club. Caps fans should be getting excited and looking forward to September, I can’t wait to get started”.

On signing for the Capitals, Fyodorov said “I have heard the Capitals have built a strong squad over the summer. The chance to experience ice hockey in the UK in a city such as Edinburgh, and play in the Elite League alongside my compatriot Pavel Vorobyov, these were all key factors in my signing. I’m excited to come to the club and I want to make a big impact on the ice. I look forward to arriving in the city next month”.

This is another huge addition for the Capitals as it recruits an impressive mix of skill and experience. The club is now in the final stages of completing its roster for 2016/17, adding a player of this calibre continues to show the club is determined to make a big impact this season.

Edinburgh Capitals welcome Yevgeni Fyodorov to the club, and look forward to his arrival in the city next month.
