28 year old former junior international Russian defenceman Denis Trakhanov is the latest addition to the 2017/18 Capitals roster.
Trakhanov is a former Russian U-18 and U-19 international defenceman who arrives at the club on the back of a season which saw him finish as the top goal scoring defenceman in Poland’s top division, with 12 goals in 36 games.
In his late teens the 5ft 9” defenceman developed as part of a strong CSKA Moscow-2 team in the Russian 3 division. He remained there from 2004 to 2009 during which time he represented the Russian U-18 and U-19 teams on four occasions each.
From 2011 to 2016 Trakhanov established himself in the VHL and played 144 games in the second tier of Russian hockey, before seizing the opportunity to move to the top league in Poland last season with KS Torun. Whilst the club had a poor season (eventually relegated), Trakhanov had his most offensive season to date becoming the 4th top point scoring defenceman in the top tier of Polish ice hockey, and top goal scoring defenceman in the league. He was to score 12 goals and 16 assists for 28 points in 36 games, which was especially impressive given the clubs eventual relegation.
On signing Denis said “I had a good year personally in Poland last season, all be it I was disappointed that the team did not have a good year. I’m looking forward to a new challenge in Edinburgh, and I have heard good things about the city and the team being created for next season. I’ll look to continue from where I left off last season and play hockey I hope excites the Capitals fans”.
Head Coach Dmitri Khristich said “He’s not a big defenceman physically but is someone who has a great attitude on the ice and off and wants to apply himself to show that the scoring touch he had last season in Poland wasn’t a fluke.”
