Veteran Dags Delighted To Be Back

30/06/2023

Edinburgh Capitals are delighted to announce the re-signing of Assistant Player Coach Ross Dalgleish for the 2023-24 SNL campaign.

Dags brought a wealth of experience to the lineup last season, both on and off the ice. Having started his junior career here in Edinburgh, he then progressed to the Capitals BNL team back in 2004-05. From there, he stepped up to the Elite league with the club and spent four seasons on the roster. Spells at both Nottingham Panthers and Belfast Giants were next on his career path before taking some time away from the game.

Although he originally signed on a temporary basis last season, the versatile 35-year-old ended up playing 28 games scoring 2 goals and 10 assists for 12 points. He was also the most penalised player on the team, sitting out 81 minutes in the penalty box. At spells last year, Dags would step back to the blue line and take to it seamlessly.

Head Coach Steven Lynch will again lean on Dags for his help and knowledge throughout the upcoming campaign. Lynchy had this to say about the return of Ross. “I’m delighted that Uncle Dags has committed for another season. He brings so many qualities to the group that are almost impossible to replace.

Knowledge, experience, and leadership are the first three that come to mind, but also he is an important member of the coaching team. The time he spends with some of the younger guys helping them with their game, the ability to play both forward and defence – where we will likely use him more this year and the fact that he’s just generally a good guy who admitted that playing hockey again made him feel 10 years younger.

He’s going to have a big part to play again this season, and I know that having him here makes us a better team.”

Speaking about his return, Dags commented. “It’s great to be asked back once again for the upcoming season. Last year we had so much fun with everyone involved, from the players, coaches, media team, rink staff, and the owners. Hopefully, this will carry on this season, and we can go one stage further and pick up some silverware.

Sneak Peak for the fans, I caught up with a couple of the younger players recently, and they are looking bigger and stronger, so it’s going to be really good fun to be part off of their journey.

Make sure you’re there, too; your support was really appreciated last season. Don’t miss it, and I will see everybody after the summer.”
