Top Defenceman Back For Season 2

21/05/2026

Edinburgh Capitals are delighted to announce the re-signing of import defenceman Sean Stewart for the 2026-2027 SNL campaign.

Canadian blueliner Sean was a massive find for us last summer when he arrived in Edinburgh to attend University. Having a wealth of experience from one of the best Junior leagues in North America, we knew we were bringing in a top defenceman.

Throughout the 2025-2026 season, the 24-year-old was without a doubt one of the best defencemen in the league. Solid and very dependable at the back end, and very rarely lost his one-on-one battles. He came in as a stay-at-home blueliner, but as the season progressed, he was also able to contribute offensively.

In 38 games, Sean scored 13 goals, 24 assists for 37 points. Finishing as our top-scoring defenceman and 5th in the team scoring chart. He will look to continue that form in the new season, but first and foremost, he will take pride in his job of stopping the opposition. Sean was also the winner of Club Defenceman of the year at the recent awards nights.

On returning for his second season here in Edinburgh, Sean had this to say, “I had lots of fun playing in front of the best fans in the league last season. There is no better place to play than a packed-out Den.

“I’m looking forward to giving them more to cheer about and continuing our success from this season. Hopefully, we can keep building on it to have another great one.

“It was great being part of such a fun group, and it was one of my most enjoyable years playing hockey so far in my career. I can’t wait for September to come back around, and we can go to battle once again. See you in a few months time, Caps fans.”

Head Coach Steven Lynch is delighted to have Sean back for another year. “When an out-of-the-blue message came in to the club this time last year from a Canadian defenceman saying he was moving to Edinburgh to study Physiotherapy and wondered if he could play some hockey on our team while he was here, we did our homework and instantly offered him a spot on the roster.

“At the time, we knew we were signing a good player who would be able to play in this league, but we maybe didn’t expect him to be the league standout defenceman that he became.

“Getting Sean back for another year is a massive signing for us. His best attribute is how simple he keeps his game. He makes a good first pass, can skate his way out of situations, is rock solid defensively, takes the body well, and contributed with some big goals throughout the season.

“We’re delighted he’s back with us again, and we expect him to have the same impact next season that he had during the last one.”

Another piece of the jigsaw is in place with the signing of Sean. We will have more pieces to announce very soon.
