Christian Returns To Edinburgh

23/08/2022

Edinburgh Capitals have confirmed the signing of German import Alex Christian for the 2022-23 SNL campaign.

Alex is no stranger to hockey in Edinburgh having iced for Murrayfield Racers in season 2019-20. The 29 year old was part of the Racers roster that lifted the NIHL 1 North Cup along with the Stuart Robertson Trophy.

The 6ft 4inch utility player can play either on defence or as a forward. Something that Coach Steven Lynch will be delighted to have at his disposal during the season ahead.

Alex was born in Dachau, Germany, and played his junior hockey in his homeland with TSV Erding, EC Bad Tolz and HC Landsberg. In season 2013-14, Alex progressed into the Landsberg Senior team and remained part of that roster the following campaign.

Alex then moved to Hamburg SV in the German 3rd Division, where he played the 2015-16 season. 2016-18 saw Alex ice in Denmark with Rodovre SIK. In his first year with the club, they made it to the Play Off Finals. The next campaign he picked up a silver medal finishing 2nd in the Danish 2nd Division, behind Gladsaxe Bears.

Alex did not take to the ice in season 2018-19 and arrived in Scotland in the summer of 2019 to attend the University of Edinburgh. Alex then signed up with the Racers and this was a successful year for him and the team. The following season, Alex again signed with the Racers but unfortunately never took to the ice due to the team not participating in the SNL that campaign.

Alex is eager to get back on the ice here at Murrayfield. “I’m really excited to join the Caps. Playing in Murrayfield pre-lockdown has been a great experience and I’m very much looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and new faces alike in the locker room. My hopes for the season are to stay injury-free so I can best contribute to winning as much silverware as possible! Playing for the Caps provides me with an optimal opportunity to continue playing hockey on a competitive level in this fantastic city while pursuing my PhD studies at the University of Edinburgh. I’m looking forward to seeing you all at the Murrayfield Arena!

Head Coach Steven Lynch could not contain his excitement after signing Alex. “I’m thrilled to have signed someone of Alex’s quality for the Capitals. When I spoke with him earlier in the summer, we weren’t sure if or how we could make it work for both parties due to his original arrival date and university commitments, but I’m glad we’ve managed to figure it out. Alex will be in and out of the country from the start of the season until the New Year, so will play when available and will join up with the team permanently as we enter 2023. He’s a player that knows the league and knows Edinburgh. Alex can play either forward or defence which will become vital for us as the season goes on. He is popular amongst the players and he’ll give us a better chance to win when in the line-up. This is another big signing for us that makes our team stronger as we continue to prepare for the season ahead.”

More signing news to be announced soon.
