#12 To Be Retired

16/08/2025

On Saturday 11th of October 2025, at our home game against Whitley Warriors, the club will honour Edinburgh Ice Hockey legend Jock Hay by retiring his #12 jersey.

Jock first took to the ice away back in the early 70s, and before long, he had signed with one of the top teams in Britain of that era, Murrayfield Racers. Jock would go on to play for the Racers for 17 years, icing in 713 games, scoring 417 goals, 576 assists for a total of 1033 points.

The Racers had a hugely successful spell in the 70s and 80s, winning numerous League titles, Play Off titles, Northern Leagues, Autumn Cups, Scottish Cups, Icy Smith Cups, plus various other silverware. Jock was part of it all and contributed to the team along the way with his will to win and leadership.

The Edinburgh-born forward also represented Scotland on a number of occasions, as well as being selected for Team GB in 1980 when they headed to China for the World Championships. After his retirement from playing in December 1991, he then stepped into the coaching and management roles with the Racers until their demise in 1995.

This would just be the start of an illustrious coaching career for Jock with Murrayfield Juniors and Edinburgh Capitals, both in the Elite League and the SNL. He was the bench coach for the Caps, playing a vital role in the club through our Elite League days, working alongside many top coaches. He then finished off with a successful spell for two years as Assistant Coach of the then reformed Murrayfield Racers from 2018-2020.

Everyone at the club looks forward to honouring Jock and being able to thank him for his contribution to hockey here in Edinburgh over the last 40 years. It’s set to be a great night with several former Murrayfield Racers and Edinburgh Capitals players in attendance.

Game tickets are on sale now at the link below. The club expects this to be a very busy evening here at the Lion’s Den, and it’s also fitting that it will be against an opponent that Jock battled against many times throughout his playing career.
