Edinburgh Capitals are excited to announce the re-signing of defenceman Ben Coughtrie for the 2025-2026 SNL campaign.
Unfortunately, Ben’s third season as a Caps player was cut short last year when, after his first shift in the opening league game, he suffered a knee injury that would sideline him for the rest of the campaign.
Ben has now undergone an operation and is regaining full fitness as he looks to return to the ice come September when the team starts the season. It was evident that Ben was a huge loss on the blueline, and we can’t wait to see him back.
In his first two years as a Caps player, he scored 2 goals and picked up 24 assists. Every week Ben was a consistent performer, and although only 24, he brings a wealth of experience having played in both the SNL and the NIHL 1. Having grown up in the North Ayrshire Junior system, Ben then made the move to Solway Sharks to see out his junior days.
He then progressed into senior hockey with the Sharks before making the move here to Edinburgh in 2022. As well as a top performer on the ice, he is a great teammate off the ice and a big part of the locker room.
On re-signing, Ben had this to say, “I’m delighted to be back for my 4th season here as a Caps player. Unfortunately, last year didn’t go to plan for me, picking up a season-ending injury in the first league game of the season. It was tough watching from the stands as I just wanted to be out there helping the boys.
“After a couple of knee operations, I am now feeling good and looking forward to pre-season to get back on the ice and regain my fitness.
“When Lynchy got in touch to ask if I wanted to sign again, it was a no-brainer. I love playing here in Edinburgh, and I am excited to see what this season will bring for the team.”
Head Coach Steven Lynch is delighted to get Ben back fit and healthy. “Obviously, Ben had the season from hell last year, getting hurt in the first league game, missing the season, and having to go through a couple of operations to fix his injuries. He is a big part of our defensive group who was sorely missed last year, which showed at times.
“He’s made a great recovery from the operations he has had and is raring to go to make up for losing a whole year of his career, and all the players and staff involved with the club are absolutely delighted for him for recovering the way he has.
“Having Ben return almost feels like a new signing for us, and it’ll be fantastic to see him back on the ice and in a Caps jersey again.”
