Edinburgh Capitals are delighted to announce the re-signing of defenceman Jonah Johnson for the 2026–27 SNL campaign.
Jonah joined the club during the latter stages of last season and quickly proved to be a fantastic addition to our blueline. Despite being just 16 years old, he stepped into the senior lineup as though he had been playing at this level for years.
A strong, physical defenceman, Jonah isn’t afraid to use his size and throw his weight around when needed. He also possesses excellent skating ability and enjoys contributing offensively whenever the opportunity presents itself.
This season, Jonah will once again split his time between his hometown club, Belfast Giants Juniors U19s, and the Capitals. He also represented Scotland at both U17 and U19 levels during the recent Sheffield Showcase events, picking up a couple of goals along the way.
In 10 appearances for the Caps last season, Jonah recorded 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points. His first goal came on his debut in North Ayr back in January, marking the perfect start to his senior hockey journey.
This is another excellent signing for the club and the return of a young player with a bright future in the game. Jonah is certainly one to watch throughout the upcoming season.
Speaking about his return to the Capitals, Jonah said, “I really enjoyed my time in Edinburgh last season. It was my first experience of senior hockey, and I loved every minute of it.
“It’s a great feeling to be back for the new season, and I’m excited to see what the year brings for us as a team. Hopefully, we can defend our trophies and build on what we achieved last year.
“Playing in front of the Caps fans was special, and I hope to see them out in their numbers once again when we get back on the ice in September.”
Head Coach Steven Lynch is equally pleased to have the talented youngster back in Edinburgh, “Jonah came into our team late last season as a 15-year-old and, to be honest, we didn’t really know what to expect. Adam Robinson recommended him to us as a young player from Belfast who was ready to take the next step in his hockey career.
“We were immediately impressed by the way he played the game and the confidence he showed at such a young age. After only a few games, we realised we had someone with real potential, so bringing him back was an easy decision.
“Chad and I are delighted to continue working with Jonah and be part of his development. We’ve had a number of conversations with him and his parents since the season ended, and we’re looking at ways to get him over to Edinburgh more regularly—not only for games but for training as well.
“I have no doubt that Jonah will play a big role for us this season.”
The roster is beginning to take shape, with more signings still to come.
