Forward Sean Cochrane has announced his retirement from senior ice hockey, bringing the curtain down on an outstanding four-year spell with the Edinburgh Capitals.
A Kirkcaldy native, Sean joined the Capitals in 2022 following the club’s reformation. He was one of a handful of Fife players who arrived alongside Head Coach Steven Lynch and quickly established himself as a key figure both on and off the ice.
Over 145 appearances in Capitals colours, Sean averaged a point per game, recording an impressive 55 goals and 90 assists for a total of 145 points.
Sean played a huge role in the club’s success, delivering countless big moments throughout his time at Murrayfield. One that will live long in the memory came during the 2022-2023 season against Kilmarnock Thunder. Trailing 5-1 after the first period, the Capitals battled back to level the game at 6-6. Then, with just 0.1 seconds remaining on the clock, Sean fired a hopeful shot from just beyond the halfway line. The puck flew past the Kilmarnock netminder, and the sound of the puck striking the pipe inside the net sparked unforgettable celebrations—one of the most iconic goals in the club’s recent history.
During his four seasons with the Capitals, Sean helped the club lift an impressive collection of silverware, including a League Championship, Play-off Championship, Scottish Cup, Northern League title and Northern Challenge Cup.
Renowned for his vision and creativity, Sean was always looking to create opportunities for his teammates and was a constant offensive threat whenever he stepped onto the ice.
His influence extended far beyond the scoresheet. In the dressing room, Sean was a hugely respected teammate whose personality and leadership helped build the strong camaraderie and culture that has become a hallmark of the Capitals over the past four years.
Reflecting on his time with the club, Sean said, “After a lot of thought, I’ve made the difficult decision to retire from playing hockey. This isn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly, but I know the time is right to step away from the game.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the Edinburgh Capitals for giving me the opportunity to wear this jersey. It’s been a privilege to be part of such a fantastic club, and I’ll always be grateful to my teammates, coaches, staff, volunteers, and everyone behind the scenes who made every season so memorable.
“To the Caps fans – thank you. Your support, passion, and encouragement meant everything. Whether we were celebrating big wins or battling through the tough nights, you were always there, and playing in front of you is something I’ll never forget.
“Hockey has given me lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and experiences I’ll cherish forever. While I’m hanging up my skates, I’ll always be proud to have been part of the Capitals family.
“Thank you for everything.”
Head Coach Steven Lynch paid tribute to Sean’s contribution, saying, “I’d like to go on record to thank Sean for giving us the four years that he gave us. When he left Kirkcaldy, he took a leap of faith; he wasn’t sure, didn’t know what to expect, but didn’t look back, even when some said he’d be asking to go back after one practise!!
“He’s told me that it was the best four years of his hockey career. He played a massive part in our success and helped to build this club. I personally think that, at 30, he’s retired far too early and I’ve told him that. The door is wide open if he changes his mind.
“If he does – great! We’ll welcome a great player and person back. If he doesn’t – then we’ll wish him all the best for the future.
“And what about the buzzer-beating slap shot from the red line in year one against Kilmarnock? Great memory, Sean.
